By Brad Haugaard
Hi, I'm Brad. If you're new, I'm Karen's partner. No, not that kind of partner. Karen and I are happily married but not to one another; we're just business partners on the Orange Cat. But don't feel
Amy's Playground bad; it's a common mistake. Anyway, Karen is fighting off a flotilla of alligators right now so she asked if I could do the column for this issue. I had mentioned to her that I am between jobs so she may have guessed that I have a bit of free time. And she's right; I do have a bit of time, and it is quite a novel feeling! I've been working pretty much steadily for the past 20 or so years, only taking off a week here and there for a quick vacation. My company was always good and never pressed me to keep my vacations short, but, well, I've always felt just a bit, umm, "irresponsible," if I took too many days off. I kept thinking that someone else was having to do my work as well as their own work, or that the work was just piling up for me to do when I got back. So when I was actually on vacation, I felt I had to "hurry up and relax," which meant, of course, that I couldn't relax. If you can avoid that feeling while you hold a regular job, you're a better man (or woman) than I am. But anyway, for the moment, the whole stress dynamic has changed. I've been off work for a couple weeks now and I must admit that I'm not anxious to get back to a regular job, though I'm going to face the music eventually. But in the meantime, I've been able to really relax. Wow! It's pretty cool. I go mountain biking and swimming in the little pool we set up in the back yard for the kids and have coffee with my dad, and generally fiddle around. Right now my big project is fixing a wooden bench with scrolly metalwork at either end. I'm learning all about red oak and drilling holes in wood, and nuts and bolts and stuff. My dad knows about that sort of thing so I've spent a bit more time with him, which is nice. Before, if someone (hi, Patti!) had asked me to fix a bench, I would have been annoyed because it would have cut into my very limited free time. But now I have the time and it is fun, even though I don't really know what I'm doing. When I left my job, I had a couple people ask me if I was retiring. (Yikes! Do I look that old?) No, I'm certainly not retiring. The very word sends a chill through my body. My father, though past what most people would consider retirement age, continues to work. He said several of his friends who did retire were very unhappy about their decision and he doesn't intend to repeat their mistake.
TheGoToMom.TV Nor do I. I don't ever want to retire unless I'm incapable of working. But on the other hand, I think that needs to be balanced with the realization that you can turn your life into a drudgery of constant work if you're not careful. Which brings me to a non-drudgy wild idea I had late last year: I decided I would take a painting class. I know that doesn't sound too wild to you, but my wife and kids kinda said, "Whaaat?" And this was a very logical reaction on their part because I had never had the slightest interest in painting. My previous painting experience was in second grade, and that was with my fingers. My decision to take an art class was not really thought out; it was more of an urge. But in retrospect I think it was an attempt to insert a bit more creativity into my life. So anyway, I signed up for an oil/acrylic painting class at the Creative Arts Group in Sierra Madre, and somewhat to my own surprise, I found that I love it! With the success of the art class, I've been thinking of other ways I might be creative. For instance, I've long wondered what activity Patti and I could do just to be together and get a bit of exercise. Then, on a little cruise to Ensenada I got a clue. The cruise ship had a number of activities, including line dancing lessons. My daughter wanted to go, so Patti, Kirsten and I went to learn how to line dance. I quickly got my feet tangled and sat on the sidelines, but I watched the smile on Patti's face as she practiced the steps, and I thought, "She's really enjoying this." (She said later she was smiling at how badly she was doing, but I know a smile of enjoyment when I see it.) So anyway, last week I took her on a surprise (also cheap) date to the Paseo in Pasadena, where there are free swing dance lessons Fridays at 6:30 p.m. through August 24. Well, these were group lessons, so I got to dance with Patti for about 25 seconds before we changed partners, and my feet again refused to cooperate. But I'm not discouraged. We ordered a swing dance video from Amazon and plan to practice at home a bit. And then, watch out! Now, like painting, this dance thing is a bit of a stretch for me. I think the last time I danced was in fifth grade, and I hated it because, yuck!, you had to do it with girls. I outgrew my aversion to girls and even married one, but probably because I just never gave it any thought, I never outgrew my aversion to dancing. It's like the time my mother gave me a liverwurst sandwich not knowing I was sick to my stomach. After that I couldn't face liverwurst for 25 years, until it finally occurred to me that liverwurst and I had simply met under very unfavorable circumstances. So I gave it another try and can now say that I can tolerate liverwurst if I must. I guess all I'm saying is that we need to insert a little variety - a little creativity - into our lives, and that maybe we should consider activities we have unconsiously formed an aversion to (and, no, I'm not talking about things that are illegal, immoral or fattening). You might surprise yourself. And if you can swing a sabattical, hey, I can recommend that as well. So anyway, I'm enjoying my time off thanks to all the pay I got for vacation time I didn't take, and money from a little freelance work, investments, and yes, The Orange Cat. I think the Cat covers most of my Starbucks expenses. By the way, if you need a lazy summertime book, and you like detective stories with a bit of cultural flavor, you might enjoy the series set in the Pasadena area by local author, Naomi Hirahara. Her detective, believe it or not, is an aging Japanese- American gardener who never wants to get involved but always does. Nicely written, nice local flavor, the characters are well developed, and the quality seems to get better with each book. I'm working on Snakeskin Shamisen, but the first in her series is Summer of the Big Bachi. And one last item. Orange Cat reader Ranjeet is looking in the Pasadena area for good daycare for his 6-month-old daughter. If you know a daycare service for which you can give a glowing recommendation, send him a note at ranjeetc (at) gmail dot com. And send us a copy, too. That would be good to know. Brad Haugaard is Editor Karen E. Klein's partner with The Orange Cat. He lives in Monrovia with his wife and two children and likes to go mountain biking and maybe dancing ... we'll see. You can reach him at Brad@theorangecat.org. |
