By Dennis Buckley, DC Fall is here and that means the start of holiday season. During Halloween, Goldstar Events Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year, there is always an ample supply of tasty treats and drinks around to satisfy any sweet tooth. Kids start with the candy giveaway at Halloween, and often float through the holiday season with plenty of soda to get them in the spirit. Unfortunately, our kids may be paying a price for that spirit by gulping down those beverages in mass quantity. Recently there was a study done by theThe American Public Health Association (APHA) which highlighted a report from the non-profit Center for Science in the Public Interest titled "Liquid Candy." It showed that carbonated soft drinks are the largest source of calories in the American diet. Beverage companies manufacture enough soda pop to provide more than 52 gallons annually to every man, woman and child in the United States. This review from the APHA showed a clear association between consumption of non-diet soft drinks and increased calorie intake and body weight. People who drank more soda pop also consumed more calories from other sources. Instead of satisfying a sweet tooth, soft drinks do just the opposite. This report raised the possibility that "soft drinks increase hunger, decrease satiety or simply calibrate people to a high level of sweetness that generalizes to preferences in other foods." It turns out that people do not compensate for the added calories they consume in soft drinks by reducing their intake of other foods. The most striking link the study made was between soft drink consumption and the incidence of type-2 diabetes. In a study of 91,249 women followed for eight years, those who consumed one or more soft drinks per day were twice as likely as those who consumed one per month to develop diabetes. This alone warrants serious concern about soft drink intake, particularly in light of the unprecedented rise of type-2 diabetes among children. Well if that’s true, you might think, we’ll just drink diet soft drinks. You could do that, but there are also problems with consuming large amounts of aspartame, marketed as NutraSweet and Equal, and saccharin, marketed as Sweet N’ Low. Also, there has been some concern about sodium benzoate, a chemical preservative used for decades by the carbonated drink industry to help prevent mold. It is also used in pickles and sauces. A study done by British aging expert Professor Peter Piper (his real name) at Sheffield University in Britain suggests that sodium benzoate has the ability to switch off vital parts of our DNA, which could lead to serious cell damage. Piper found that sodium benzoate damaged the "power station" of the cell, the mitochondria, which can make the cell malfunction. There are a whole host of diseases attached to this malfunction, such as Parkinsons and other neuro-degenerative diseases that attack the nervous system.
PEN Dr. Piper says that "the food industry will say these compounds have been tested and they are completely safe. By the criteria of modern safety testing, the safety tests were inadequate." His concern is for the parents who buy soft drinks in ever-increasing amounts for their children. By any standard, an increase in soft drinks, regular and diet, may pose serious health risks such as increased calorie consumption, decreased activity, diabetes, possible neurological damage and psychological problems that can result from looking and feeling bad. Is it really worth it when there are so many great options? Water and natural fruit juices can satisfy your thirst and your child’s sweet tooth while bringing health benefits rather than hazards. This holiday season, moderate the soda intake for yourself and your children, save yourself many useless calories and improve your health.
